LET may be used with any of the mathematical or logical operations. Thus, to obtain a variable representing weight squared from the existing WEIGHT: DEFINE WTSQUARED , WTSQUARED WT * WT Missing Values Missing values are represented in ANALYSIS programs by a period. Thus, to set AGE to the missing value, the command is: AGE . b ; Recoding Data DEFINE AGEGROUP RECODE AGE TO AGEGROUP BY 10 will place ages into 10-year age groups so that you can use AGEGROUP for tables or frequencies. You can also specify the exact codes desired for each value in a RECODE statement: DEFINE CTYNAME RECODE CTYCODE TO CTYNAME 1 ROME 2 AUGUSTA A frequency of CTYNAME will then list the number of records for "ROME" and "AUGUSTA" rather than "1" and "2". c ; IF Statements For example, to create a variable to categorize smokers into current former and never smokers, when you have variables CIGSEVER have you ever smoked: yes no ; and CIGSNOW do you currently smoke: yes no ; : DEFINE SMOKE then use an IF statement to give it values: IF CIGSEVER "Y" ; and CIGSNOW "Y" ; \ THEN SMOKE "CURRENT" ELSE SMOKE "NEVER" IF CIGSEVER "Y" ; and CIGSNOW "N" ; THEN SMOKE "FORMER" Note that if the statement is too long for one line, the "\ " backslash ; is used to tell ANALYSIS that the next line is to be considered part of the same statement in a program. In writing conditional statements in the IF and SELECT commands, it is never incorrect to surround each complete condition with parentheses and to separate parts of a statement with spaces, although neither procedure is necessary in all cases. Values of string variables but not variable names ; should be enclosed in quotation marks. "Nested" IF statements, in which one IF results in another IF statement, are not allowed. The ELSE clause at the end of the IF statement is important to specify what should happen if the conditions are not met. 5. SAVING the new variables as part of a new EPI-INFO file As noted above, all these operations are temporary ie. the new variables will disappear when you issue a new READ command or exit from the program ; . To save them requires 3 commands: ROUTE CLEANED.REC eg. to save a new data file called `cleaned.rec'.
The Special Programme on Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction was established by the World Health Organization in 1972 and has maintained an important role in research on preventing unsafe abortion and its consequences for maternal mortality. The work on preventing unsafe abortion at WHO is directed at ensuring that, where abortion is legal, the procedure should be safe. Despite a global trend toward the liberalization of abortion laws, unsafe abortion remains an important unresolved reproductive health concern and the need to identify priority research areas continues. Interventions such as the Safe Motherhood Initiative have been successful at reducing maternal mortality in some countries; however, until unsafe abortion is eliminated, complications from unsafe abortion remain a major cause of maternal mortality. To achieve the overall goal of eliminating unsafe abortion by improving the safety of abortions, it is necessary to understand the factors behind the persistence of unsafe abortion and the opportunities and barriers to preventing unsafe abortion. A consultation on "Priorities and Needs in the Area of Unsafe Abortion" was convened in Geneva, Switzerland, in August 2000, to bring together internationally prominent researchers from a variety of disciplines to assess the global status of unsafe abortion and to identify a research and advocacy agenda to reduce unsafe abortion and its burden on women, their families, and public health systems. A number of emerging and long-standing issues related to research on unsafe abortion formed the background discussion to the chapters in this volume. A few of these topics are discussed in this chapter, because drug use.
Women's safety organisers and pharmacy students at UBC are partof a massiveeducation campaign about the dangers of so-called `date rape drugs, ' and they say Rrohypnol isn't the only such drug people should watch for. Rohypnil is a trade name for flunitrazepam, a colourless, odourless drug which has been slipped in drinks at campuses across the US and Canada to make unsuspecting party-goers into easy targets for sexual assault. But accordmg to Erica Slack, a second-year UBC pharmacy student atUBC and the author of an informational pamphlet on date rape drugs, the intense focus on Rojypnol has been blown out of proportion by the media. While feature stories on shows like Minutes and 60 Oprah Wi&ey have investigated onlyRohypnol, up to twenty different kinds of drugs have been found in connection with drugged sexual assault: Valium, cocaine, a central nervous system depressant called gamma hydroxybutyrate GHB ; , and a veterinary anesthetic called ketamine. Slack adds Paul Bernard0 and Karla Homolka used Halcion on their targets. `Rohypnol seems to be the strongest' says Slack. Her pamphlet states the drug is used in 64 countries around the world, includmg Mexico, Europe and South Americafor treating sleep disorders. It dissolves quickly in a drink and exits the bloodstream w 48 hours of ingestion. Rohpnol is part h i of large family of sleeping drugs called benzodiazepines, which have been used to treat anxiety and severe sleep disorders for 3 5 years, and areone of the most widely-used classes of medication in the world, according to literature by Hoffmann-La Roche Limited, the company whichmakes Rohypnol. Margaret Papachristos, a c o o with UBC`s Safer Campus Peer Educators Program, says to her knowledge, there have been no reported cases of drugged date at rape UBC. However, the Peer Educators have established two regular workshops on campus which provide information on the drug, as well as produced pamphlets which are htributed at the workshops, various campus health event tables, and at the Women Students' Office in Brock Hall. Hoffmann-LaRoche have announced plans to control the misuse of Rohypnol, such as addmg a blue dye to Robypnol tablets, and changing the formulation so that it does not dissolve quickly in liquid. It has been suggested the company should stop manufacturing Rohypnol altogether. Slack is undecided about her opinion on the p r e posed solutions. 'Even if Rohypnol were to completely `vanish from the market, ' she explains, `drugged date rapes would still remain a problem.'.

Hoffmann-La Roche, the Swiss-based pharmaceutical house that manufactures Rohypnol, a sedative banned in the United States but legal in many other countries, has started an ad campaign titled "Watch Your Drink." In what has been termed "roofie rape, " unsuspecting women are slipped the drug in a drink and become dizzy and disoriented. They then pass out and have little or no memory of what happened, including cases of sexual assault. According to an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education June 28, 1996 ; , reports of suspected Rohypnol-related date rape have sprung up on campuses from the University of California, Los Angeles, to the University of Florida. Increasing reports of problems related to the use of Rohypnol, known as the "date-rape drug, " have lead the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency DEA ; to ask that it be placed in the same category as heroin, cocaine, and LSD. According to DEA spokesman Jim McGivney, before recommending reclassifying Rohypnol, the agency documented more than 2, 400 federal, state, and local criminal investigations involving the drug between 1993 and March 1996. The drug is most prevalent in Florida, Texas, and California, but officials fear that its use is increasing. The Chronicle reports that police at large universities in those states say they've heard about the drug, although most say they've had no or only a few reports of its use. Maggie Gerald, coordinator of the Victim Advocate Program at the University of Florida Police Department, told the Chronicle that she first heard about the drug a year ago. Since then, she said, many students have come forward to tell about using it, and 20 to 25 women have reported blackouts that made them suspect they had been drugged. Victim advocates at other public universities in Florida have said that their students are also using the drug, she adds and synthroid.

B: mean spike density function for 36 SC buildup neurons recorded in the 2 stimulus square condition of the Go No-Go task is plotted for a 600-ms epoch. This condition was chosen because it is the condition in which SC neurons had a low discharge rate but still had welldetectable pauses. Black trace was made by convolving a Gaussian to the spike train 10 ms ; , whereas the orange trace was created using the exponential function of Sato and Schall 2001 ; . Trace is aligned on the onset of the cue indicated by the solid vertical line at time 0 ms ; . Solid, horizontal line is the mean discharge rate of the neurons average of 200-ms discharge rate before cue onset ; and the dotted, horizontal lines are 2SD measured from the Gaussian-fitted data. Solid orange horizontal lines are 2SD from the exponential fitted data. See text for definitions of terms. C: instantaneous slope, in spikes ms, is plotted against time for the same epoch as in B. slope of 0 is indicated by the solid horizontal line. Alignment on cue onset is indicated by the vertical line at time 0. 20a Appendix A negligence] is not what we're talking about . We're talking about whether or not this physician prescribed a controlled substance outside the bounds of his professional medical practice." ; . These instructions, taken as a whole, set the proper threshold for conviction, mandating application of a criminal standard of proof and precluding conviction on a lower civil standard. The fact that the district court may have invoked language, taken in isolation, suggestive of a civil standard, would not alone lower the government's burden of proof. Indeed, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to purge an instruction under 841 a ; 1 ; of all references to permissible standards or norms of care, since the third element of 841 a ; 1 ; requires a determination of whether the defendant's conduct is outside the usual course of professional conduct. The jury instructions here went further in defining the proper criminal standard and distinguishing it from the civil standard than those which we approved, albeit in different contexts, in both Tran Trong Cuong and Alerre. We therefore find no error with the district court's instructions and tamoxifen.

As explained in detail elsewhere in this Value Report, 2004 was characterised by a whole series of increasingly severe measures including price reductions, further reductions in the tax deductibility of certain marketing expenses or taxes on the latter ; , low influenza morbidity and, above all, the legal disputes between the originator of an important molecule and the generics companies that are about to launch generic versions, which affected the business of our fine chemicals unit on the North American market. Despite these difficulties, the management strategies that the Group launched to overcome the effects of these phenomena enabled us to close the year with our pharmaceutical division achieving an operating margin that was in all respects on forecast, and actually above forecast in percentage terms. The severity of the aforementioned situation affecting our fine chemicals unit prevented it from achieving similar performance, although the results net of this phenomenon - which was both entirely extraneous to the unit and, moreover, solely involves a delay together with the results for its other products, were all in fact above forecast.

Christine Maric, Richard Mankhey, Faizah Bhatti, William Welch, Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, DC Dietary supplementation with -lipoic acid LA ; increases insulin sensitivity and renal dysfunction in diabetes. The primary mechanism by which LA is renoprotective is thought to be through glycemic control, while its benefits as an antioxidant in diabetic nephropathy are poorly understood. This study was performed in non-diabetic ND ; and streptozotocin-induced diabetic D ; male Sprague-Dawley rats, supplemented with daily insulin 4 6U ; . The animals were fed normal rat chow C ; with or without a dietary supplement of LA 400 mg kg ; for 12 weeks. We assessed renal function by measurement of urine albumin excretion and creatinine clearance, renal structure by morphology and oxidative stress by NADPH-induced superoxide anion generation by chemiluminescence. The data are expressed as mean SEM, n 4. a P 0.05, aaP 0.01 vs C in same metabolic state ; bP 0.05, bbP 0.05 vs ND in same treatment group. These data indicate that in the diabetic kidney, LA acts as an antioxidant by reducing superoxide anion generation, and is renoprotective by improving creatinine clearance, reducing albuminuria and glomerular and tubulointerstitial damage ; independently of its glucemic control. However, in the non-diabetic kidney, LA acts as a prooxidant by increasing superoxide anion generation and exacerbating renal function and pathology. We conclude that, at a dose of 400 mg kg a dose similar to the recommended daily intake in humans ; , LA improves renal function and pathology associated with diabetic nephropathy, but has detrimental effects in the non-diabetic kidney and serevent.

Stroke is the third most common cause of death in the UK, and the prime cause of severe physical disability. It affects around 100, 000 patients each year. Risk of stroke increases exponentially with age, with half of all first strokes being in people over the age of 70 years35. There are three main causes of stroke. Ischaemic strokes are a result of localised loss of blood flow in the brain; this can be caused by a blood clot blocking a blood vessel in the brain itself, or, more commonly, by narrowing and obstruction of atherosclrotic blood vessels in the brain. In contrast, haemorrhagic bleeding ; strokes are caused by rupture of a blood vessel in the brain36. Haemorrhagic strokes are generally more disabling than ischaemic strokes caused by blockage of blood vessels37. At present there is no effective treatment for stroke which really improves the outcome. A number of drugs and blood-dilution techniques have been tested, but there is no clear evidence that they are worthwhile35; we discuss some of these later. As in heart attack already discussed for Charing Cross ; , aspirin started a week or two after a minor ischaemic stroke definitely aids long-term secondary prevention35.
